Lionel Messi is one of the most valuable players in the world. He is also regarded as the greatest player in the world and the best part of it is the fact that he is only 24 years old.
It has prompted suggestions that a Lionel Messi could be worth as much as £ 100 million or even more.
Many have also been thinking about the fact that Barcelona would only want to sell the player in order to cash in, but Barcelona president Sandro Rosell differs to think that way. This is because the Barcelona president believes that any other club would sell Lionel Messi, but not Barcelona.
Most of the clubs in the world are privately owned unlike Barcelona, who are owned by the fans. Hence, Sandro Rosell believes that it would be very tough and almost impossible for Barcelona to contemplate selling Lionel Messi one-day because the fans will simply not allow it.
Despite acknowledging that Barcelona will never sell Lionel Messi, Sandro Rosell said that Barcelona are struggling at huge debts at the moment. They have been extremely successful over the last three seasons, but Rosell revealed that there are debts up to € 500 million, which was mainly created due to the inefficient work of the previous regime.
"Messi is not for sale. A corporation would sell him because it is a company seeking profits. But this is not the case with us. Competition with such corporations is difficult ... but long term it is we who will have more success. There will come a day when a millionaire, a patron, will grow tired of investing money and the club will cease to exist. We inherited a debt of €500 million. We have imposed a policy of extreme austerity for two years," said Rosell in an interview given to the L'Equipe.
Barca face Chelsea in the Champion's League semi-final, with Messi et al odds-on to make the final. Chelsea will have another chance to win a trophy though - their fa cup odds show that they are firm favourites to beat Liverpool in the final.
