Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi has said that he never dreamt of breaking the goal record for Barcelona.
The Argentine superstar recently broke the record of Cesar Rodriguez, which has been held since 1940s, of the most number of goals for Barcelona.
Lionel Messi has now scored 234 goals for Barcelona in all competitions, putting him ahead of the likes of Ronaldinho, Ronaldo, and many other greats. Hence, there has been a suggestion that Messi is one of the best players in the world, who may be even compared to the likes of Diego Maradona. Messi achieved the record after scoring a hat-trick against Granada during the weekend.
This also helped Barcelona reduce the deficit between them and Real Madrid to just eight points. Messi has scored the 234 goals in just 314 appearances for Barcelona. This season alone, he has scored 54 goals in all competitions.
After becoming the top scorer at Barcelona, Messi said that he never dreamt that he would attain such a status in his career. He also said that each and every goal scored by him is very important to him. Messi has helped Barcelona win the Champions League title two times in the last three seasons.
"The truth is that I am overjoyed. I never dreamed that one day I could be Barcelona's top scorer, overtaking Johan Cruyff and so many others. I don't know if it was my best goal. When a game finishes, the first goal I scored for Barcelona, just like the last one and just like all the others, they are all very special to me. I have always wanted to repay Barcelona for all they have done for me," Messi said after the record-breaking goal. Barcelona manager Guardiola said that Messi is so good that he is very much like the Michael Jordan of football.
